Приведен к присяге новый посол США в России. Многолетнее знакомство позволит мне вслед за Хиллари Клинтон называть его "Майк" без излишней фамильярности. Макфол в 2003 году даже написал весьма позитивный отзыв на мою книгу - https://rowman.com/ISBN/9780742525610 ("...required reading for anyone interested in understanding Russia's protracted transition from communist rule... important insights about transitions in large states that contributes to our more general understanding of democratization beyond the Russian case. It is a serious book by a superb collection of authors that mixes interesting theory and original empirical research", ну и все такое прочее). Должен сказать, что Макфол и впрямь являлся одним из наиболее активно публиковавшихся специалистов по российской политике. Хотя не все его тексты одинаково познавательно полезны, они отличаются целостностью и последовательностью взглядов и, что называется, easily readable - неудивительно, что курс Макфола по российской политике, по отзывам, так нравился студентам в Стэнфорде. Интересно, впрочем, что специалистом по России он стал по воле случая - вот как сам Майк в предисловии к своей книге Russia's Unfinished Revolution (вышедшей в 2001 году) рассказывает занятную историю своей академической конвертации в специалиста по России и пост-СССР:
«In the spring of 1988, I travelled to Moscow to do some final interviews for my dissertation on revolutions in southern Africa... I wanted to meet Soviet scholars working on the same subject. My visit to the Institute of African Studies that spring was mostly a bust. KGB agents disguised as senior researchers were not that revealing about their activities in fomenting revolutions in Angola, Zimbabwe, or South Africa… One real scholar at the Institute, Tanya Kransopevtseva, took my research interests seriously. Away from oppressive confines of the Institute and in a safer place provided by a park bench at Patriarch’s Pond, Tanya explained me what the Soviet Union was really up to southern Africa. When she finally figured out that my dissertation was about revolutions, she scoffed at my case selection: “Why study Angola when a revolution is under way right here in the largest country in the world?”
My chance encounter with Tanya that spring had huge consequences for the path that my research and life interests would take. She introduced me to two scruffy, crazed, romantic evolutionaries... Moved by the bravery of these anticommunist revolutionaries, I reoriented my personal life and academic career to follow their struggle... Встреча с Таней на Патриарших прудах неожиданно повлекла за собой появление нового специалиста по российской политике (и будущего посла), хотя политическая наука, возможно, в итоге лишилась перспективного африканиста. Так или иначе, у Макфола появляется новый шанс по части interact, interview, and drink with many of these makers of history in real time. Не думаю, что он окажет сильное влияние на российско-американские отношения, а уж тем более на внутреннюю российскую политику - но, похоже, миссия нового посла будет не слишком скучной :)
