о чем издательства просят рецензентов
Aug. 16th, 2017 04:46 pmОдно довольно известное британское издательство (нет, не Oxford UP и не Cambridge UP)попросило меня прочесть рукопись книги и посоветовать, стоит ли ее публиковать. Рукопись не академическая, а, скорее, публицистическая, попадает в категорию current affairs. Издательство эту рукопись не заказывало, предварительного контракта у автора не было. В отличие от научных журналов, в издательствах рецензирование не носит анонимный характер - рецензент знает, чью рукопись он/а оценивает, автор при желании может узнать ex post, кто рецензирует его/ее рукопись, но только с согласия рецензентов.
Ниже список вопросов, на которые меня просят ответить - может быть интересно потенциальным авторам, которые иногда хотят знать, как воспринимают их рукописи по ту сторону издательских баррикад:
1. How would you situate and rate the author? Would you say that he is truly outstanding? How would you compare him to other specialists in the field?
2. Does this book make a major, original and important intellectual contribution? What’s so original and important about it? Can you briefly summarize what you see as the main contribution of the book and assess its importance?
3. [издательство] is considering this book for its series on NNN, which aims to make some of the best books on XXX available to a global English-language readership. Is this book of sufficiently high quality – in terms of its scholarship and the rigour of its analysis – to include in a series of this kind? Are there any significant weaknesses or limitations?
4. This book is made up of several pieces: does it hang together as a coherent book, or is this a significant weakness in your view?
5. Does this book have any obvious competitors? If so, is it sufficiently distinctive and original to stand out from competing books?
6. What do you see as the main market for this book in English?
a) Would it be of interest to scholars in the social sciences? Would it also have a readership among students – if so, in which subjects and at what level? Can you see it being used for teaching in the US or UK – if so, for which courses?
b) Does this book have the potential to reach a wider non-academic readership? What would make it appeal to a wider readership? Is it written in an engaging and accessible way? Is it the kind of book that might get reviewed in The New York Review of Books?
7. Would this book travel well into the English-speaking world? Are there any features of the book that might seriously limit its reception in English – e.g. might it be locked into literature and debates that are specifically NNN in character and very unfamiliar to readers in the global English-speaking world?
8. In sum, would you recommend that we publish this book? If so, how strongly would you recommend this – enthusiastically or lukewarmly?
